Hy tagged me for the Seven Random Things meme, and now that I’ve put it off for a week, I’d better bite the bullet and see if I can find something which isn’t so terribly boring that you’ll all run off to the hills.
1. I’m former military. I grew up in the military and I spent my own time in service. It has given me some K2-sized soapboxes about the importance of proper training and mentoring methods and the sheer stupidity of tossing someone in a supervisory position without that training . . . or of assuming that education qualifies one to supervise or mentor.
2. I’m not a fan of roses. I much prefer flowers which aren’t hothouse-based. Lately I’ve seen some gorgeous rhododendron and hibiscus, and I love certain lilies. Having said that, I received an orchid as a thank you this past week, and I rather love it.
3. I once went camping in a hurricane. It wasn’t precisely intentional, and we didn’t quite figure out why the campgrounds were empty until we found ourselves floating on our air mattresses when we woke the next morning. We sort of went home in a hurry.
4. I have a fatal weakness for New York-style cheesecake and made-from-scratch German Chocolate cake.
5. I once spent a vacation at a working guest ranch in Wyoming (Don and Betty Pellatz and family; they were wonderful). That’s where I learned what rabbit’s ear sage feels like, and fell in love with the unique smell of dust and crushed sage.
6. I am incredibly envious of those for whom language comes easily. I was once moderately fluent in German, but pretty well lost most of what I knew when I began to pick up Norwegian. An associate has a four year-old daughter who speaks German with her father, Norwegian with her mother, French with her grandmother, and a bit of English with anyone who doesn’t fall in those three language groups. She’s four. Sigh.
7. I remember the Berlin Wall. I was there long before it came down. I saw it; had the barrier not been there, I would have touched it. It was depressingly real. Now that it’s gone, I’m not entirely certain it hasn’t just morphed into existence elsewhere.
Ah, well. You’ll have to settle for boring.
Since it seems as if the meme has made the rounds, I won’t tag anyone else. However, if you feel like it, feel free to grab it!

That didn’t sound boring at all! Of course we are used to our own lives. Things that we take for granted may surprise someone else.
That last random thought was a huge one. And very true, I think.
